Nyungwe Forest

Rwanda’s Pristine Rainforest

Situated in the southwestern region of Rwanda, is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, boasting a rich tapestry of biodiversity. This sprawling, verdant forest stretches over rolling hills and steep valleys, creating a mystical atmosphere filled with the sounds of nature. The park is a sanctuary of dense foliage, intertwined vines, and towering mahogany trees, forming a canopy that shelters countless species of wildlife. Waterfalls cascade down moss-covered cliffs, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers.

Primate Tracking & Biodiversity

Nyungwe is renowned for its incredible primate diversity, home to 13 different species, including the charismatic chimpanzees and the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkeys. Chimpanzee tracking is one of the park’s highlights, offering visitors the thrilling experience of trekking through the lush forest, guided by the sounds of hooting and rustling leaves, until you come face-to-face with a group of these playful and intelligent creatures. Nyungwe is also known for its large troops of colobus monkeys, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, leaping through the treetops in a mesmerizing display of agility. Birdwatchers will be enchanted by Nyungwe’s vibrant avian life, with over 300 bird species, including the great blue turaco and the red-collared mountain babbler.

Adventures & Canopy Walks

The park offers more than wildlife tracking; it is a hub for adventurous activities amidst nature’s wonders. The park’s famous Canopy Walkway, suspended 60 meters above the forest floor, provides a thrilling perspective of the treetops and a chance to spot birds and monkeys from a bird’s-eye view. For hiking enthusiasts, the park boasts an extensive network of trails, such as the Igishigishigi Trail and the Isumo Waterfall Trail, each offering different experiences, from exploring serene waterfalls to wandering through fern-filled valleys. Visitors can also partake in guided nature walks, uncovering Nyungwe’s unique flora, including orchids and giant ferns. Beyond the forest, cultural encounters with nearby communities provide insight into traditional Rwandan life and the deep connection the locals have with this ancient forest.
