Akagera

Akagera is a sanctuary for Rwanda’s diverse wildlife and the country’s only home to the “Big Five” – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. Following successful reintroduction efforts, the park now boasts thriving populations of lions and black rhinos, adding to its status as a premier wildlife destination. During game drives through the savannahs and woodlands, visitors can spot giraffes, zebras, hippos, and large herds of elephants grazing across the plains. The park’s wetlands and lakes are teeming with birdlife, making Akagera a paradise for birdwatchers with over 490 species, including the striking shoebill stork and the African fish eagle. A boat safari on Lake Ihema provides a unique vantage point to view hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds up close, adding an exciting dimension to the wildlife experience in Akagera.
